Silk Art Quilt – Buddha

October 23, 2008

Another very special art work is the following art quilt on silk from the Asian style series.
This piece was the result of a call for competition in the US. After that it was shown at several venues in the USA and received quite a lot of attention.

The original title was “View from a Window” which was the same as the motto for the competition. The challenge was to create an image that represented the view from outside through a window or the other way round – the view from inside towards the outer world. This could be interpreted literally as in looking through a window into a garden or in a figurative sense.

I chose the figurative sense, the view from the outer world into the inner soul which meant in this case the confrontation with Buddhism and its tenor and perceptions, its teachings and models. The floating figure of a Buddha was meant as a metaphor for the salvation from all matter and worldly.

The top layer (there are 4 layers, not the regular 3) of this quilt represents the window through which you can look into the soul.

In the close-ups you can see how the quilting created a nice relief on the silk. This effect works best on silk only.

The top layer is loose, only fixed at the sides in order to create a kind of 3-dimensional effect, as you can see in the detail photo to the left and below.
